Breaking Into Philately? Here Are 4 Exhibiting Tips Philately is the study of stamps, postal history, and other related items. This isn't exactly a hobby that popular mainstream culture focuses on, but it certainly has its fans.

The majority of philatelists aren't exactly millennials, either, as only 36% of all individuals under the age of 30 look forward to checking the mail each day. But many fans of philately, both young and old, do love the feeling of running to the mailbox in hopes of finding a great new stamp to add to their collection.

If you're thinking about breaking into this exciting community, or just plan on exhibiting your stamp collection for the first time, here are some tips that should help you:

  • Find your own style -- You can do plenty of research online and find specific color varieties and popular philatelic styles, but they have all been done before. Originality is a major part of philately, so try your best to find your own hook.
  • Don't overdo it -- Your collection display doesn't have to be this extravagant shout for attention. It can be quite simple and still look amazing. Keep your description underneath your display extremely brief and concise and limit your display by leaving some space within the exhibit frame.
  • Try and tell a story -- These exhibits aren't just a pile of stamps you've collected over the years or a way to harken back to postal styles of the past, they are for you to tell a real, authentic, and original story. These exhibits should have a purpose and illustrate a specific philatelic story you're trying to get across to your viewers.
  • Make the exhibit for you -- Far too many philatelists focus on crafting their exhibits to please judges or other postage collectors -- don't make that mistake. If you really want your exhibit to standout, focus on creating the exact collection that you want and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
